Later this morning hundreds of veterans are expected to attend the 3rd annual Nueces County Veterans Services “Stand Down” event.

This will be a one-stop-shop that will be showcasing all the services and resources available for veterans.

If you are, or know, a military veteran that’s fallen on hard times, let them know the Nueces County Veterans Services want to help any way they can at their annual Veterans Stand Down event.

In the military, “Stand Down” afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being.

For a third year in a row, the Nueces County Veterans Services will host a Homeless Veterans “Stand-Down” event. It all starts Friday, November 2, 2018 at 311 N. Staples Street where the old MG Building Materials supply store use to be. From 9:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m.

“The Stand downs are one part of Department of Veterans Affairs to provide services to homeless veterans. This event is a way to honor our veterans, and it is also a way for us to identify homeless veterans in our communities and hook them up with the many services that are available to them. The “Stand Down” will be providing services to homeless veterans such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings,” said Nueces County Veterans Service Officer Martin Longoria.

The event is one important way to help connect veterans experiencing homelessness to a permanent housing program, immediate interim housing, and supportive services to improve their health, access to income, and overall well being.

The “Stand Down” is made possible through VA’s close collaboration with many community partners including government agencies, volunteers, non-profits, businesses, social service providers, and faith-based organizations.

This community event is a significant symbol to the area Veterans as it presents a safe time and place where Homeless Veterans can receive critical services in Corpus Christi, Texas.

With more than 30,000 veterans in Nueces County, the Veterans Affairs Office is looking to help those homeless veterans and veterans who are at risk of becoming homeless. This event will give them an opportunity to speak with VA healthcare representatives and community agencies to receive information on housing, employment, mental health, education, and other benefits.

Veterans and their families also will be treated to a hot meal, a haircut, housing information, medical screenings, job and housing referrals and more.

“Veterans are also able to get information about benefits and assistance programs, get connected with community homeless providers, social service providers and other area providers,” said Longoria.
