3 Christmas Decorations You Can DIY

Tis’ the season to DIY holiday decorations! Homemade decorations always turn out better (and if they don’t they have that great thing we call character!) Check out these 3 great DIYs!

1. Personalize Seating

Give your dining room chairs a holiday update by whipping up these chair swags — no sewing required. Just cut red felt into a notched banner shape, then cut gray felt into the same shape just 1 inch shorter on all sides. Center then glue the smaller gray felt onto the red using fabric glue. Spray-paint wooden letters white and let dry. Attach them using wood glue to the gray felt. Punch holes in the swag’s upper corners, slide ribbon through, and attach to the chair backs with ribbon.

2. Yarn and Button Holiday Topiaries

Get a little help from the kids to create these cheery Christmas topiaries. Great as a centerpiece or mantel or foyer decoration, these yarn-covered trees will add a colorful pop to any room.

Materials Needed:

  • 3 foam cones (small, medium and large)
  • 3 different colors of yarn
  • assortment of medium and large buttons
  • hot glue gun and hot glue
  • assortment of large pom-poms
  • scissors
Glue Yarn

Use hot glue to secure the loose end of a ball of yarn to the bottom of a foam cone.

Wrap Yarn

Continue to tightly wrap the entire cone with yarn. Cut off the end once you’ve reached the top and secure it to the top of the cone with a dab of hot glue.

Attach Pom-Pom and Buttons

Attach a large pom-pom to the cone’s top with hot glue. Cover the cone with a variety of medium and large buttons, attaching them with hot glue.

3. Light Up Your Entryway

Create a warm and inviting entry for guests during the Christmas season. Fill mason jars with Epsom salt for a snowy, winter look, then add small votive candles and line the walkway leading to your front door.
