Lego Blocks Will Now Be Made With Sugarcane

Efforts to find sustainable methods of creating bricks has lead Lego to harness sugarcanes for plant-based plastic.

Lego will begin using sugarcane-sourced plant-based plastic with the botanical elements of their play sets. These will be included in box sets, to be released within 2018 and onwards.

The new bioplastic is called polyethylene which is soft and durable, but nearly identical to regular plastic despite being sourced from sugarcane.

“This is a great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all Lego bricks using sustainable materials,” said Tim Brooks, vice president of Environmental Responsibility at the Lego Group.

The long term goal for the company involves having all core products and packaging be made from sustainable materials by 2030. JB
