New York’s First Candy Museum To Open In Early 2019

In early 2019, New York City will see yet another food-themed museum filled with opportunities for munching, shopping and selfie-taking.

Named the Candy Museum, this 30,000-square-foot candy wonderland—located in the iconic Limelight Club space on the corner of 20th Street and Sixth Avenue—is first of three museums founded by Sugar Factory.

In line with the company’s 22 retail stores around the world (35 by end of 2019), the Museum of Candy takes a playful look at the infamous 1983 nightclub’s layout, using the winding staircase to highlight the candy installation and hundreds of surprising features, such as edible candy murals, live art installations by local artists, and musical performances.

Clearly, the main focus of the museum is to celebrate “Sweets, treats and fun!” said Charissa Davidovici—Founder of Sugar Factory.

When asked why three museums and not just one, she noted, “We want to spread joy across the nation just like we have with our restaurants. Each museum will be built off the same idea but will also have different elements and rooms that cater to their respective locations.”

As of press date, the third location is yet to be determined, but the second museum is projected to open in Los Angeles in 2020.

Needless to say, viewers will get a major sugar rush. With more than 15 candy-themed experiential rooms, this space boasts more than 500 different types of candies (That’s the largest selection of candy in the world!). While Sugar Factory prefers to keep the museum renderings as a surprise, here’s what Davidovici has to say about the most interesting highlights.

#1: GUMDROP ROOM

“Without giving too much away, the 2,000-square-foot gumdrop room will feature 20,000 gumdrops.”

#2: CANDY CANE FASHION SHOW

Unlike regular fashion shows, guests can dress up and go on stage here. With a large selection of candy canes as backdrop, plus a stage area with costumes and props, guests can join other “candy cane fashionistas” on the catwalk.

#3: CANDY CAFÉ

Six to 12 candy makers will show you the entire candy and gummy bear-making process. Aside from viewing everything through the glass window, guests may be able to join the fun too. On average, Sugar Factory makes about 10,000 gummy bears per day for all their New York City locations, and this café will be where they’re all made.

#4: WORLD’S LARGEST GUMMY BEAR

Beyond the 50 rotating flavors of gummy bears available for purchase, one of the highlights of the museum is a 25-foot gummy bear entrance that took more than six months to create. “There will even be multiple ‘Gummy Bear Police’ to guard the piece.”

#5: CANDY UNICORN

“The 10-foot candy unicorn will easily become the most Instagrammed candy unicorn in the world. It’s being developed as we speak and will feature a candy-bejeweled horn.”

#6: CANDY MEMORY LANE

Currently, the museum is working closely with candy experts and historians on gathering the most interesting information, and finding the most exciting way to share them. At this Instagram- worthy Candy Memory Lane, you will learn about the evolution of the candy industry from the 1900s through today. Expect to engage in different activities and themes within each room. For example, there will be a station at the Gummy Bear room where guests can learn the making process and take the candy home. Also, “We will be selling candy from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.”

#7: WORLD’S FIRST DESSERT MARKETPLACE

Admit it: You’re probably visiting for the eating and the shopping. This 5,000-square-foot dessert extravaganza near the front entrance will see more than 20 vendors and confectioners from around the world making gummy bears, donuts, cookies and different pastries. What’s more, they will sell more than 500 different types of candies by the pound plus tools you may need to make your own candy at home.

Tickets ranging between $15 and 25 will include multiple candy and dessert tastings. Visit Museum of Candy for more information and updates.
